The
Aluminum Question ????
Naturally Fresh Crystal Stick Deodorant
vs. the ones
with harmful Aluminums
(look at the label on what you're using).
The Naturally Fresh Deodorant is a crystal
stone. Since crystal deodorants are
naturally
formed and have no artificial colors or scents
added to them,
the Aluminum does not
have
to be
processed.
When Aluminum IS processed, the
molecules
must shrink and therefore become small enough
to penetrate
the skin. Until there is more scientific
research on the harmful
effects of
Aluminum,
we suggest using a deodorant that
has no
harmful Aluminums - such as Naturally Fresh
and better yet, it really does work!

Get Out!
You could get gorgeous before you go out -
but why not go out to get gorgeous?
While
most women look forward to going out, let's be
honest - it's a lot of work.
We can spend hours
picking the perfect outfit, blow-drying our hair,
choosing
the right eye shadow and curling our eyelashes
just so. Instead of getting
beautiful
for the next
big night out, why not make beautification the point of
it?
It's the activity du jour (or nuit) for
bachelorette parties, bridal showers,
birthdays, holiday
get-togethers - or just another girls' night out.
Lily's Apothecary in Plymouth hosts Girls' Night Out
about once a month,
featuring hair stylists, makeup
artists and skin care experts who give women
advice,
information and get them all done up as they sip wine
and chat in a
party atmosphere. The next event is
Monday, and features Los Angeles
Hair Stylist Olivia
Peters, who will do hair and scalp consultations using
the
Phyto computerized hair monitor to determine the
best products for each
woman's hair type.
"For many of the women, it's usually a night they
would
typically not get out," said Susan Melchin,
owner of Lily's, which opened in
1998 to carry unique,
sophisticated and often hard-to-find beauty
products".
"It's a real treat,' she
said. 'Women don't need to be nervous or come
in 'done-up'
or know anything about makeup - it's
a non-threatening, no-pressure, fun
experience. Drawing inspiration from ladies'
nights at fashion meccas such as
Henri Bendel and Bergdorf Goodman, which Melchin frequented while living
in New York City, the free events at Lily's are social
nights, too, with
complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres
and dance music. By the end of the night,
Melchin
said, "You should see how fabulous everyone
looks. Plus, they're having a blast."
But her passion for helping women look and feel better
goes far beyond a makeover.
'"I want my women
to know what they're buying,' she said. "There's an informational
and educational basis to
the events. That's what apothecaries do - I give a
ton of
free samples because I want women to try them and
find the product
that works best for them."
And it's for that reason that she can make such
events
admission-free. Private parties have a $40 fee,
but if women
purchase $40 of anything in the store,
which they almost inevitably do, the
beauty consultation
and makeover are free.
One group of six
girlfriends makes a weekend of it once a year, Melchin
said.
They stay overnight in downtown Plymouth, within walking distance of Lily's,
at the Jesse Harlow
House Bed & Breakfast. With Plymouth's
restaurants, waterfront,
monuments, museums and beaches,
the event at Lily's becomes just one activity in
a
girls' weekend. Joy Murphy, 32, of Plymouth, has
three children ages 3, 4 and 6.
She tries to
attend every event at Lily's. "It's a great
night out with cocktails and
my friends and no-stress
shopping without the children," she said.
"I read an article about it a year ago and I said
'That's where I need to be!'
It's fun, and the products
are fabulous. It has absolutely changed my
hair."
Where
to get beautified - and show off later

Stocking up...
Local merchants have lots of of stuff for 'stuffers.'
Instead of searching for
something to stick under the tree for
loved ones this year, consider creating
Christmas stockings that
cater to their comforts, interests or hobbies. Local retailers
have plenty of goods - and good ideas - to help create theme stockings.
Winter Beauty...
Ol' Man Winter does a number on skin, lips and
hair.
So why not fill a stocking with rejuvenating beauty
products?
Susan Melchin, proprietor of Lily's Apothecary in
Plymouth,
suggests For Lips, a lip balm with shea butter by Annemarie
Borlind ($10);
Collagen Moisturizer for the face with SPF 15 by Mario Badescu
($22 for 2 ounces); Hand Cream by Ahava ($18.50 for 3.4 ounces);
Walnut body lotion by Mario Badescu ($10 for 6 ounces);
and Phytojoba Hydrating Shampoo by Phyto ($20 for 6.7 ounces).
Or conjure up summer memories with a bottle of

It's Ladies'

Experience a taste of Manhattan when Lily's Apothecary
hosts
Ladies' Night on May 6th. According to Susan Melchin,
the
store's owner, a relaxing evening, complete with wine, hors d'oeuvres
and music
awaits and consultants
from both Ahava and Phyto will offer
free consultations. "It's very similar to what they do in Henri Bendel's",
Melchin said, referring to the high-end Fifth Avenue department
store.
''Both lines are high-end", Melchin said, "It's a New
York City-type thing.
Women are used to shopping in
department stores and the makeup
counters are no longer in
vogue".
The evening will go beyond
beauty products, offering a social
scene
where women can kick back
and relax and Melchin encourages them to bring a
friend or two.
"There will be highly intelligent conversation going on and
you'll stumble onto a conversation and say "that's me to a fault".
Melchin said there will be no pressure to purchase. "If you get
enthusiastic, that's
great", she said. "If not, that's cool too."

nothing to show for it? We're here to help.
"It is the last minute holiday of them all, says Susan Melchin,

it's like, Oh My God - Valentine's Day is Saturday".
"Melchin said it's not surprising, given the dismal first couple of months
of the
year. January just kind of lolls along and in February everyone
is in this gray, lifeless mode and
the next thing you know, it's Valentine's Day.
Guys scramble into this store the week of".

would have envisioned the vast array of creams, antioxidant-rich

Try before
you buy
At Lily's Apothecary in
Plymouth, cutting-edge cosmetic brands are
sold the
old-fashioned way - with personal attention and by putting the
customer's convenience first. Shopping for makeup can turn into a
nightmare for many women. Clerks at makeup counters run the gamut
from snobbish and aloof
to pushing products
on customers that they
don't need or want.
The lighting is either too dark or too bright, giving
buyers a
false sense of what the products will look like when they get
them home. Then thee are prices which can be astronomical.
From this came a
new kind of shop that is gaining popularity.
It's called the
apothecary, where customers can try out the products before
buying, in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Apothecaries,
reminiscent of the old-time drug stores for which
they were named,
are becoming the "hip" places to shop
in New York, Los Angeles,
Miami Beach and now in Plymouth.
At
Lily's Apothecary, in the heart of downtown Plymouth,
"try
before you buy" is the philosophy of Susan Melchin,
proprietor.
"I wanted to create a beauty place for women in New England
like no other,"
said Melchin, whose shop is one of just two
apothecaries in the region.
"I am trying to bring a slice
of New York, South Beach and Europe to
women in this area." The ambience of Lily's is best described as
avant-garde,
eclectic and cosmopolitan. It's elegant, but still has a
warm and friendly atmosphere that
greets visitors.
Located in the Historic Post Office Building built in 1914,
Lily's combines a little history with ultra-hip beauty essentials.
The
interior of Lily's is designed to preserve the historic structure
of the building that features high-arched
ceilings updated with
paint in shades of "Miami Beach" purple, Melchin's favorite
color.
Providing a backdrop for the brightly colored bottles and containers
are the original metal
post-office boxes along the back wall
and white marble floors and walls that reach up to the
ceiling.
The shiny brass light fixtures are original and were
restored to give them a fresh look.
For customers who can't make it to Plymouth, shopping is just
a click away through the 20-page user-friendly web site at
www.lilysapothecary.com. Shades of lip color and makeup are
illustrated and there are
detailed descriptions of all items.
"I hope lots of women want this kinder,
gentler way to
buying cosmetics and skin care products".

Susan
Melchin approaches beauty with a "try before you buy"
philosophy.
Lily's Apothecary in Plymouth, which opened in July, features a
pedestal sink where
customers sometimes spend 45 minutes experimenting. When they're
done, they wash
it all off. Melchin's hard-to-find lines, which are often
promoted in fashion magazines
(including Deigo Dalla Palma, Annemarie Borlind and Ahava from
Israel), have drawn
customers from as far away as New Hampshire and
Manhattan.
"Women love this stuff," says Melchin. "It's
self-empowerment. It's a huge stress
reliever to give yourself half an hour in the morning for
self-care."

Pioneer
Susan Melchin opened lily's Apothecary in the post office
building on Main Street. Situated among the 1915 brass fixtures, marble
walls and metal mailboxes are brightly colored bottles of Bumble and Bumble,
a cult hair
care line from New York
and makeup by Diego Dalla Palma,
a cosmetics guru from
Milan. "I'm one of only four store in the whole
country that carry
this line," boasted Melchin, who in her five months
of business has attracted clients from as
far away as New Hampshire
and Springfield. "These women are just craving this.
" Among those giddy about Lily's is Joanne Nikitas, a
40-year-old
Plymouth woman
who "could just go in and try on lipsticks all
day."
"When my manicurist is putting on my polish, people ask,
'Where'd you get that color?' Believe it or not (I tell then) Plymouth, Mass.,"
said
Nakitas, who buys a lot of Deigo Dalla Palma products as well as
the
Israeli skin care line Ahava. Melchin has set up a
working sink
in the back of the store so women can try colors more easily.
She also encourages women to take samples to test at home,
under different lights.
"Walk out the door without buying it - I prefer that,"
she said. Trisha Santos
experimented with a variety of products
before she bought anything. Now, the
30-year-old State Street Bank
employee is a regular at Lily's and she's
brought co-workers to
shop there, too. " Comparable to what's out there, it's not a
real hit
to the budget," she said.
